Porcelain, i.e. pressed ceramic crown

Contents

A porcelain crown is a natural-looking, tooth-preserving, sophisticated solution for restoring a beautiful smile.

What Are the Characteristics of a Porcelain (Pressed Ceramic) Crown?

It is made using a modern process: the material of the crown is pressed under high pressure, resulting in a tooth restoration that is mechanically extremely resistant, with almost titanium hardness. As the entire crown is made of ceramic, it does not contain a metal framework, making it exceptionally aesthetic. The advantage of a metal-free crown is that it does not cause metal allergies, so we confidently recommend it for cases of metal sensitivity.

Porcelain crowns are mainly used for front teeth, where they excel due to their ability to match the tooth's shade. They are primarily made as single crowns.

The advantage of a zirconium or porcelain crown is that, compared to traditional crowns, significantly less tooth material needs to be removed for its preparation; the dentist only removes a paper-thin layer.

The advantages of a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown

In modern dentistry, we use metal-free restorations. Press ceramic crowns are metal-free, therefore they are recommended for those with metal allergies. Metal-free restorations for up to 100%, they do not have any harmful effects on the body, are anti-allergenic and biocompatible.

As the full crown is made of ceramic, an improved aesthetic result is achieved compared to metal-ceramic crowns, with which the colour of natural teeth can be perfectly reproduced.

Porcelain's translucency is similar to that of human teeth. Pressed ceramic is strong and durable, making it an excellent choice for front teeth. It seals perfectly and fits precisely onto the prepared tooth.

A further advantage is that little tooth substance needs to be sacrificed for its preparation, thus avoiding damage to the dental pulp.

How is porcelain press ceramic crown made at NaturaDent Laser Dentistry clinic?

If you wish to replace your old crown with an aesthetic pressed ceramic crown, or if you anticipate needing a crown, we warmly welcome you to our practice for an initial dental assessment. On this occasion, we will take a digital panoramic X-ray to gain a comprehensive overview of the condition of your teeth both above and below the gum line.

The process of making a press-formed porcelain crown is painless. When we are fitting a press-fused porcelain crown, we prepare the tooth under anaesthesia. If necessary, after removing the decayed areas, we carry out a core build-up. In the case of root-canal-treated teeth, it may also be necessary to cement in a tooth-coloured post to reinforce the tooth’s structure.

Once the impressions have been taken, a dental technician will fabricate the dental prosthesis. It is important to note that you will not be left without teeth whilst the prosthesis is being made: our dentists will always provide you with a temporary prosthesis made either in the surgery or by a dental technician a temporary crown is fitted to the prepared tooth. Until the permanent restoration is ready, we fit the tooth with a temporary crown, which can be made immediately in the surgery or, if required, in the dental laboratory.

After the fabrication of a zirconia crown, the crown is tried in. If it is comfortable and meets aesthetic, colour, and functional requirements, the dentist will permanently cement it.

What Are the Characteristics of a Porcelain (Pressed Ceramic) Crown?

Before the permanent dental prosthesis is fitted, we treat the gum tissue with a laser to ensure the surface is completely free of bacteria and saliva. Using the laser, the fixative is bacteria-free, is carried out on a sterile surface; as a result, with proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, the finished crown can last a lifetime.
