Cleaning and care of ceramic, porcelain, gold and zirconia crowns and bridges

Did you know that a well-made, perfectly fitting crown, which also meets your aesthetic needs, can last a lifetime? How can you preserve the integrity of your dental crown for as long as possible, avoid chipping, fracturing, decay underneath, discolouration, or gum swelling? Our article will reveal all!

What can I expect regarding the lifespan of the crown?
The integrity of zirconia, press ceramic, porcelain, gold, and any dental prosthesis is determined by the integrity of the prepared tooth. At NaturaDent clinic, the preparation of dental crowns is carried out with great thoroughness. It is extremely important that the prepared tooth is anatomically stable so that it can withstand the future load.

The load-bearing capacity of a tooth is also influenced by its position in the mouth. A dental prosthesis made for a misaligned tooth can significantly reduce the lifespan of the crown.

For the longevity of a crown or bridge, it is essential that the biting force is distributed evenly and on the appropriate surface. Otherwise, it may chip or break sooner, meaning it will protect the tooth for a shorter period.

To protect the teeth and the planned dental restoration, the best dental practices first correct any bite disorders and then create the dental restoration.

What do we use to fix aesthetic zirconium, press ceramic, or porcelain crowns?
At our dental practice, we pay particular attention to working with quality materials that we would be happy to have placed in our own mouths. The bonding agents we use for fixing dental crowns are tooth-coloured or transparent.

They do not harm the body, living tissue, or the finished prosthesis. They are not allergenic and do not have side effects.

The secret to a long-lasting dental crown:
Regular and thorough cleaning:
Alongside the essential daily routine of brushing your teeth thoroughly for at least two minutes, twice a day, the use of dental floss and interdental brushes plays a key role. They should be cleaned with the same meticulousness as your own teeth.
Six-monthly dental hygiene and dental check-up:
The six-monthly check-up is free! The free service and warranty are valid provided you attend the regular six-monthly check-ups.

Cleaning the zirconium bridge:

Regular and thorough cleaning:
Alongside brushing your teeth for 2 × 2 minutes, we recommend using superfloss or an interdental brush. Superfloss has a stiffened end, making it easy to thread under bridges. Thoroughly clean the surface of the prosthesis as if using dental floss, then remove the superfloss.

Are there any disadvantages to having a zirconia, pressed ceramic, or porcelain crown made?
The creation of a dental crown is a rescue operation aimed at preserving the tooth's root. We often use it to save root-treated teeth.

Preparation of the tooth for a crown requires the removal of healthy tooth tissue, as the tooth needs to be prepared appropriately for even loading, in accordance with the aforementioned static requirements. With the above-mentioned care and the achievement of a correct bite position, the successful creation of a dental crown can save the tooth from extraction for many decades.

Can a previously made, damaged metal-ceramic or zirconium crown be repaired?
As the preservation of the tooth is paramount, we generally recommend replacing old, damaged crowns.

The injury, chipping, may be caused by the bite disorder described above, which needs to be treated, or by decay under the crown, the safest treatment for which requires the removal of the existing dental restoration, thus ensuring the protection of the existing tooth structure and avoiding extraction.
