Treatment of jaw joint problems

Contents

Jaw clicking, popping, grinding, and the pain resulting from these are very common and extremely complex dental problems affecting many people.

If you have this type of problem, there is no need to worry, your problem is not unique and there is a solution to alleviate it, and even to eliminate your pain forever.

There are several reasons why the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can wear out. These include: * **Arthritis:** Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can affect the TMJ. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition where the cartilage wears down over time, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints. * **Trauma:** An injury to the jaw or TMJ, such as a direct blow to the face or a dislocated jaw, can damage the joint and lead to wear and tear. * **Teeth grinding and clenching (Bruxism):** This involuntary habit, often occurring during sleep, puts excessive force on the TMJ, causing it to wear down over time. * **Jaw joint disorders:** Conditions like internal derangement, where the disc within the TMJ is displaced, can cause abnormal joint function and lead to wear. * **Genetics:** Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing TMJ disorders. * **Connective tissue diseases:** Certain diseases that affect connective tissues throughout the body can also impact the TMJ.
The biting surface of the teeth does not fit properly and maintains the jaw joint in an incorrect position even when at rest and closed.
During chewing, the joint can receive a disharmonious load, for example, in case of missing teeth, when chewing unilaterally.
Many people grind their teeth day and night, even while sleeping, which also causes constant tension in the jaw joint.
A common consequence of our increasingly stressful lifestyles is intense teeth grinding, neurologically driven, which puts strain on the teeth, wears down tooth surfaces, can cause misalignment, and stresses and tenses the jaw joint.
Dr. Fülöp Papp Márta is explaining how the jaw joint wears down.

The average person uses their jaw joint 10,000-15,000 times a day, often more times than their legs or knee joints. If, for some reason, the joint receives a tension load, this is repeated 10,000-15,000 times a day, increasingly consuming and damaging the normal joint tissue.

If it runs out or wears down, pain will set in, which, in the absence of care, can escalate to the point of being unbearable, turning every word, bite, and even peaceful sleep into hell.

Which method can be used to reduce pain?
The problem can be resolved if it is detected in good time and treated with sufficient professionalism. The jaw joint can be gently and carefully guided back to its resting, comfortable state, where it can regenerate.

In our practice, we use a therapeutic splint developed by Prof. Lawrence F. Andrews, which has already yielded excellent healing results many millions of times. This splint helps to guide the jaw joint into its resting position, eliminates pain, teeth grinding, and further chipping of tooth necks and chewing surfaces.

At the end of our treatments, your jaw joint will also be repositioned. We will then ensure that your teeth fit perfectly in this new, balanced, tension-free position, fully satisfying their masticatory and aesthetic functions.

Following the advice and recommendations of our dentists and dental hygienists, the temporomandibular joint can be held securely and stably in the correct position, meaning painless speech, chewing, and sleep for you from now on.
