Long-term successful orthodontics with a functional approach

Contents

Everyone who embarks on orthodontic treatment does so for a lifelong result. We don't want to have to extract healthy teeth, and in fact, we want to opt for a treatment that promises a certain and beautiful result with the least possible discomfort.

General overview of orthodontic treatments
A large part of this area has less connection with other specialist areas outside of dentistry. In other words, general orthodontics today is interested in the structural aspect of treatment, that is, correcting the bite abnormality. This can be done, for example, by extracting teeth to make sufficient space for the other teeth.

The perspective of functional orthodontics at Naturadent practice
Functional orthodontics takes into account that, for example, a permanent tooth erupting in childhood will be the same size as it will be in adulthood, whereas the size of the jaw continues to grow until adulthood is reached.

The emphasis is on complexity: orthodontics also plays a role in breathing and shaping the airways. Positioning the lower jaw correctly can treat and prevent snoring, sleep apnoea, and mouth breathing, the latter of which also has a role in speech therapy.

Due to the above interdependencies, more and more orthodontic specialists are recognising that they have a responsibility in shaping the patient's other functions during the course of their treatment.

If functional considerations are lacking behind orthodontic treatment, this can cause problems later on.

It is important to know that the same function with a different setting can lead to joint problems, causing much greater complaints even decades later than the condition prior to treatment.

Therefore, the functional approach aims to restore the patient's health, meaning it asserts that it creates not only a beautiful smile, but a healthy one too. The essence of the approach is that a change in tooth position or bite originates from the abnormal functioning of some process, stemming partly from heredity and partly from being incorrectly established within the patient's own growth program.

At Naturadent, we approach orthodontics with a functional perspective, working closely with other dental specialties within the practice, as well as with speech therapists and other medical specialists.

So in team work, we heal. By uncovering functional deviations and the root of the problem, we try to improve the patient's situation.
