A missing tooth has a much wider negative impact than we might initially think.

Tooth loss not only causes aesthetic problems but functional ones too. Its detrimental effects can be felt both in the short and long term. It affects our diet, our self-expression, and even the health of our existing teeth.

The consequences of tooth loss can include: * Shifting of remaining teeth * Jawbone loss * Difficulty speaking * Difficulty eating * Changes in facial structure * Self-consciousness

If we experience tooth loss, or lose a tooth for any reason, it is advisable to have it replaced with some kind of solution, as an empty gap in the dental arch can cause several problems.

What happens if a missing, lost tooth isn't replaced?

  • The adjacent teeth move towards the gap
  • They fall over, they lengthen, their roots lose stability
  • The chewing power of the teeth decreases significantly
  • The gums are becoming inflamed.
  • Every bite causes pain, eating will be torture
  • The jaw is not loaded, so its bone thins and weakens significantly.
  • The jaw joint also becomes inflamed.
  • The muscles of the face and neck are deforming.
  • This deformity affects the spine, and through it, the whole body.
  • Posture changes, gait changes, the position of internal organs.

If you have a missing tooth, you essentially have two options. You can either have a so-called bridge made, which involves using the two healthy teeth next to the gap to bridge the missing tooth, or you can opt for a dental implant, which is a much more stable, healthier, and longer-lasting solution than a bridge, thus preserving your healthy adjacent teeth. Read on if you want to know all about dental implants!

Our practice uses and applies state-of-the-art implants made from biocompatible titanium. Currently, these bio-implants are the best means for replacing missing teeth.

When there is a tooth deficiency, why do we recommend opting for a dental implant?

  • There is no need to grind down the adjacent healthy teeth, as is the case with a dental bridge.
  • Hair transplantation can be performed at any age.
  • Dental implants are painless, guaranteeing a new, stable tooth within 3-6 months if you choose the right implants.
  • The titanium artificial root integrates into your jawbone, creating a bond that is even more stable than your original tooth.
  • The new tooth will continue to strengthen the jawbone and gums, keeping them healthy in the long term.
  • The embedded dental implant perfectly matches your original teeth in terms of colour and shape.
  • In cases of multiple missing teeth or complete tooth loss, removable dentures can be a full replacement.
  • Your dental prosthesis will remain stable, perfectly usable, reliable, and undetectable for 50-60 years after implantation.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root, which is inserted into the jawbone through the gum. It is a perfect alternative in case of tooth loss, as it is an extremely durable alternative that can restore the function of the original tooth.

It's most often made from titanium – this is the best and most stable alternative – because due to its biocompatible nature, it integrates well with bone, practically becoming part of the human body.

A quality dental implant can last a lifetime and is very versatile, as it can replace a single tooth or even function as a support for a dental bridge or prosthesis.

The advantages and disadvantages of hair transplantation

From a health perspective, a dental implant has only and exclusively benefits. The disadvantages are more related to the recovery and treatment process, which everyone is aware of and accepts before the implant is placed.

This is worth keeping in mind when discussing the pros and cons:

Benefits:

  • Durable and stable Properly fitted and later well-maintained dental implants will provide an effect similar to a natural tooth root for many decades, thus ensuring stability and the restoration of chewing and biting capabilities.
  • Does not require removal of living pulp tissue:The biggest disadvantage of dental bridges in the case of tooth loss is that they require the grinding down of adjacent teeth. However, no such intervention is necessary with implants.
  • Natural effectCrowns, prostheses, etc., are placed directly onto the implants, perfectly matching the existing teeth in terms of appearance, thus providing a natural look.

Disadvantages:

  • Bone grafting may be required If the jawbone is weak for any reason or anatomically, bone grafting must be performed before implant placement.
  • Long recovery time Compared to a dental bridge, dental implants require a very long healing period from patients, so the entire process can take several months.
  • Costly intervention It is costly, however, there is no other dental method that achieves such a durable and aesthetic restoration, making it the best alternative in terms of value for money.

Contraindications for dental implants

For most people, the placement of a dental implant is completely straightforward, but there are cases – often temporary conditions – where treatment is not recommended. Let's look at the most important of these:

  • Periodontal disease: Untreated periodontal disease always precludes the use of implants. In such cases, it must first be treated and corrected, and only then can dental implantation take place.
  • Severe, untreated diabetes If someone has very severe diabetes, or does not take care to control their blood sugar levels, this can also be a contraindication for implantation.
  • Osteoporosis In its untreated form, osteoporosis also affects the jaw, which is why implantation is not recommended in such cases either. However, after appropriate treatment, or with bone grafting, this problem can be overcome later.
  • During active cancer treatment: Cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy, is also a contraindication for dental implants. However, if the patient has recovered and their immune system has been restored, implants can be used.

Dental implant for a tooth and complete tooth loss

The versatility of dental implants is well demonstrated by their applicability in replacing a single tooth, as well as in cases of complete tooth loss.

For a single tooth, an implant is placed, and after healing, a crown can be built onto it without grinding down the surrounding teeth, which, in terms of appearance and shape, will fit perfectly into the dental arch.

However, when replacing multiple teeth, the number of implants needed is always dependent on the situation.

In the case of partial tooth loss, for example, when several teeth are missing next to each other, at least two, or if necessary, three implants are placed in the jawbone to provide stable support for the prosthesis.

However, it may be necessary to replace a complete tooth loss in this way, for the lower or upper jaw.

In these cases, four or six implants are usually placed in the jawbone, onto which a so-called fixed restoration, a fixed prosthesis, is fitted. This is much more durable and effective than a denture, as it provides the experience of real chewing and biting – alongside perfect aesthetics.

Care of a dental implant

A common misconception regarding dental implants is that they do not require cleaning, as they cannot decay or break. While the latter is true, maintaining proper oral hygiene is still extremely important, even in cases of complete tooth loss.

This is why, without regular brushing, plaque can also adhere to the surface of implants, which can promote bacterial growth in the mouth, something that is entirely common with poor oral hygiene, even without plaque.

The bacteria then cause gingivitis, followed by periodontitis, which can jeopardise the stability of implants, meaning in extreme cases the loss of the implant can even occur.

This is why it is very important to pay attention to oral hygiene after a tooth implant – it needs to be just as thorough as with natural teeth – and to also ensure you attend your six-monthly check-ups, with professional tartar removal as needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is the placement of a dental implant painful?

Hair transplantation is always performed under local anaesthesia, so the procedure itself does not involve pain. Discomfort may occur as a side effect of the treatment, but it can be effectively relieved with over-the-counter painkillers.

How long does recovery after a dental implant take?

This depends on a number of factors, but most importantly on the patient's condition. It generally takes 3-6 months for the implant to properly bone in and become load-bearing. Because of this, the entire treatment can take up to 4-7 months if bone grafting is not required.

The best dental implants are made of titanium, which are not only biocompatible but also extremely durable. If someone suffers from a titanium allergy, there is the option of having an implant made of zirconium fitted.

Zirconium or titanium implant?

Titanium is not only the most common but also the strongest and most effective alternative for a dental implant. Zirconium implants are primarily recommended only for those with metal allergies.

Can diabetics receive dental implants?

Provided that diabetics are properly treated for their condition and keep their blood sugar levels under control, there is no obstacle to dental implant placement. However, this must be proven through rigorous examinations.

What happens if there isn't enough bone for a dental implant?

In this case, bone grafting precedes the implantation, where a bone graft material is placed into the jawbone as part of a minor dental surgery, so that the future prosthesis can be properly stabilised.

When can I return to work after having an implant fitted?

It depends on the job, but most people can return to work the next day, however, at least one day of rest is recommended.

What should you pay attention to after dental implants?

Mostly, appropriate oral hygiene is recommended, as well as giving up harmful habits, so smoking and alcohol consumption are not advised, and even dairy products are not recommended. Furthermore, it is advisable to eat soft, pureed foods for a few days.

Can my tooth implant become loose?

Provided the patient follows the implantologist's instructions, there is very little chance of an implant being rejected. However, this can occur due to infection, poor oral hygiene, or overloading.

Can dental implants cause an allergic reaction?

Very rarely, it is worth preparing for an allergy test, as metal allergy sufferers may experience side effects. In this case, a zirconium implant must be used.

How durable is a dental implant?

High-quality, correctly implanted, and well-maintained dental implants can last patients for up to 40-50 years or even a lifetime.

Can tartar form on an implant?

Not on the implant itself, but on the crown placed on it, yes, which is why proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups are important.

How to clean the dental implant correctly?

In concrete terms, the implant is placed in the gum, so there is no need to clean it, but the crown parts need to be cleaned with a toothbrush, floss or tooth-cleaning brush, just like living teeth.

The process of dental implant placement, steps:

The implantologist specialist warmly invites you for an implant consultation for the first time.

  1. Part of this involves an oral examination supplemented by a panoramic X-ray. The panoramic X-ray provides a two-dimensional view of the jawbones, enabling the determination of the position of adjacent tooth roots and any abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye but require treatment before tooth implantation.
  2. During the consultation, the implantologist dentist listens to the patient's needs, informs them about the steps of dental implantation, where they can choose the desired type of implant and ask any other questions.
  3. If the condition of the teeth and gums is satisfactory, we will prepare the 3D CT scan here at Naturadent before the dental implant, which maps the position, quantity, and density of the teeth and bone in 3 dimensions.
  4. Based on the CT scan, the implantologist can plan the dental implant procedure, taking into account the patient's needs, thus gaining a clear picture before the intervention.
  5. A prerequisite for dental implantation is adequate bone structure. For the implant to integrate with the bone and for long-term, comfortable, and unnoticeable wear, it is essential that the implanted tooth is sufficiently embedded in the bone. If the bone structure at the site of implantation is less than required, bone grafting is necessary before implantation.
  6. If the bone structure is adequate, the implant will be placed into the bone at a pre-arranged appointment.
  7. At Naturadent, patients receive a laser disinfection treatment at the same time as implant placement, thus preventing bacterial build-up and promoting faster healing. This is repeated a further two times, ensuring that the disinfected, healthy gums free from harmful bacteria heal better.
  8. The osseointegration time for a dental implant is 3-6 months, which is necessary for long-term load-bearing.
  9. Following this, the superstructure and the aesthetic crown will be fitted.

To replace a missing tooth, you will need:

  • 1 implant screw
  • superstructure
  • 1 crown

How can the risks of dental implants be avoided?

As read above, tooth implantation requires proper preparation. Each described step of dental implantation serves the purpose of minimising risks.

Bacterial infection can be prevented with a course of three laser sterilisation treatments at the time of implant placement. The implant's unalloyed titanium material does not cause allergic reactions or other illnesses, even over decades.

The correct choice of dentist, appropriate consultation, diagnostics, and preparatory work involving the analysis of digital images are the keys to successful dental implantation. By adhering to all of these, dental implantation is a safe dental procedure.

How does a laser assist in dental implants?

Following the insertion of the implant screw, we pay particular attention to ensuring that the osseointegration is successful and that the surgical site heals well.

In our clinic, all implant screw fees include three sessions of laser biostimulation. It is scientifically proven that laser treatment promotes faster and better healing, aids regeneration, and prevents harmful bacteria from reaching the implant site.
