Periapical curettage - Root planing

Periodontal disease is an irreversible condition of the gums. If your teeth are getting loose, you have chronic halitosis (bad breath) and your gums are sore it is recommended to see your dentist, because you might have periodontal disease.

How can you recognize periodontal disease?

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums or other pain in your mouth
  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food
  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, causing the teeth to look longer than before
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pus between your gums and teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

If you notice these symptoms you are more likely to have periodontal disease.

To save your teeth and maintain a stable condition of your gums we need to clean the gums and the root surfaces of the teeth.

In the case of gingivitis and periodontal disease a pocket forms between the tooth and the gums in which debris and inflamed tissues can appear. These cannot be removed by flossing or brushing, professional help is needed to clean the area.

Our caring and prepared dentists and parodontologists are always here to help you to the best of their knowledge. We will do our best to treat your periodontal disease without pain.

Let us help you in the treatment of your gum disease!

The steps of treating gum disease:

  • scale and polish that removes the supragingival (above the gum) debris and calculus (tartar)
  • root planing/closed curettage under local anesthesia
  • around problematic teeth we carry out periapical curettage which includes smaller incisions on the soft tissues

Our closed and periapical curettage treatments are painless and in many cases, they can be carried out with our modern laser dental equipments.

The application of laser has many advantages: there is less bleeding, healing takes less time and the laser beam disinfects the area. For more information about our laser dental treatments please ask our colleagues.

Our laser treatments do not involve the removal of previous filling materials. During laser treatments sometimes it is necessary to use an anesthetic injection. We aim to provide calm and painless treatments to our patients. The different advantages of laser dental treatments are experienced to different extents in different stages of the treatment. We aim to provide treatments without any pain in a calm environment.

For the accurate diagnosis of periodontal disease, we use special periodontal instruments that can measure the pockets. We record the measured values and analyze the X-rays as well. If you have an appointment booked with us please bring your X-rays with you. If you do not have any recent X-rays you will need to have new ones taken.

Our colleagues are happy to give you more information about diagnostic centers where you can have your X-rays taken. In most cases, we also take microbiological samples of the inflamed tissue to find out what pathogens are causing the disease. Once we know the pathogen we can treat the inflammation with the appropriate antibiotics.

Periodontal disease is inheritable

If your parents or grandparents have suffered from periodontal disease, you will likely have the disease too. If you know about anyone in your family who has gum disease you will need to pay more attention to the health of your gums.

It is advised to have regular 6 monthly check-ups and scale and polish. Your kids are also at risk of developing this gum condition, therefore it is important to monitor their teeth with maximum care.
