Opinions are sharply divided among people regarding regular dental check-ups. Many believe that if they brush their teeth twice a day, they have done everything necessary for proper oral hygiene and the health of their teeth.
While it's true that proper dental care is the foundation of oral hygiene, a very important component is missing from the formula: regular dental check-ups, so that a professional can check the condition of our teeth at least once every six months.
Few realise, however, that at certain intervals even those people may need dental hygiene treatment, who, by the way, do everything for their teeth, because there are some changes that cannot be completely prevented even with regular brushing.
Therefore, we have compiled 7+1 compelling reasons below why it is worth visiting the dentist for a check-up at least once every six months, as this can prevent a lot of discomfort and more serious conditions.
2. The tartar will stand no chance
The greatest benefit of regular dental check-ups is that you can effectively combat tartar build-up. This is a significant problem, as tartar can appear even among those who pay great attention to brushing their teeth regularly.
Tartar is simply hardened plaque that has not been removed. In the long term, this can not only cause aesthetic issues but also contribute to the development of tooth decay.
This hardened plaque can form on the teeth because very few people manage to brush their teeth thoroughly several times every day, which may not only be due to a lack of proper technique, but often also to the specific characteristics of the teeth themselves.
In cases of malocclusion, or uneven teeth, it is very common for plaque to build up in the gaps between teeth, and this cannot be removed by traditional methods.
The removal of plaque is always carried out by qualified dental hygienists using instruments specifically designed for this task.
At NaturaDent, we employ qualified dental hygienists who perform tartar removal using specialist ultrasonic scaling. If the condition of the gums requires it, they also carry out laser pocket disinfection. This results in a far more professional outcome compared to when a dentist simply removes tartar in relation to the treated tooth.
If we have our teeth cleaned at least once every six months, we can prevent problems such as tooth discolouration or gum recession, as well as tooth decay.
2. Not only healthier but also whiter teeth await us
Removing tartar yields immediately visible aesthetic results, so if you're committed to a sparkling white smile, regular dental check-ups at least every six months are strongly recommended.
Although it can trigger serious processes in the background, dental calculus is primarily seen as an aesthetic problem by many. This is because dental calculus itself leaves a yellowish, sometimes brownish or blackish discolouration on the teeth, which is extremely unpleasant.
However, once the tartar is removed, one of the important steps in the process will be polishing, which is beneficial for several reasons.
On the one hand, it contributes to making the tooth surface pleasantly smooth and removing all residual plaque that causes discolouration, and on the other hand, the smooth surface makes it harder for new deposits to adhere.
This will not only make your teeth look much whiter, but also healthier, but an important condition is that this procedure must be done at least once every six months, or at most once a year.

3. Gum disease can also be prevented
As we have already written above, if we visit the dentist for a check-up every six months, and in addition to a thorough examination, tartar is also removed, then we can do a lot to prevent unpleasant and painful gum inflammation.
This type of inflammation is characterised by the gums swelling and becoming reddish upon development, but common symptoms include sensitivity and bleeding, which can primarily occur during eating or brushing.
Not only is it unpleasant and painful, but it is also a dangerous condition, as gingivitis can easily spread to the bone supporting the teeth, which, without treatment, can cause gum recession, or tooth loss.
Gingivitis has predisposing factors, and if we suffer from it frequently, a six-monthly dental check-up is highly recommended, as it's possible we might not notice minor inflammations ourselves, but an experienced dentist can spot them immediately.
In such cases, the underlying problem can be eliminated by laser cleaning the affected area, known as laser pouch disinfection, and gingivitis can be easily treated by prescribing various oral hygiene products.
4. Bad breath can be eliminated
If we suffer from unpleasant smells and this is not a constant but a frequently recurring problem, then regular dental check-ups are also recommended.
Although many factors can lie behind bad breath, in the vast majority of cases, it's due to some dental disorder. Often, inadequate oral hygiene is the underlying cause, but few people realise that tartar and gingivitis can also produce such symptoms.
Determining this is always the dentist's job, who, during a thorough examination, can immediately identify whether the problem causing the unpleasant symptoms falls within their remit or not.
If so, a dental hygiene treatment may be necessary, such as a thorough scale and polish, to get rid of unpleasant plaque and the bacteria that adhere to it.
However, dental hygienists can help not only with this but also with comprehensive advice that promotes the establishment and maintenance of proper oral hygiene.
5. Caries can be treated in time
Tooth decay is a prolonged process with various stages. Many people only visit the dentist when their tooth already hurts or they notice some visible changes, even though most of these could easily be prevented.
The six-monthly dental examination is an excellent opportunity, as the interval is long enough to necessitate a check-up, but not so long that emerging problems can still be nipped in the bud.
Most dental conditions often develop over many years, so regular dental check-ups can detect an emerging abnormality in time, and appropriate intervention can prevent bigger problems and more costly dental procedures.
The earlier an intervention is made, the simpler and more budget-friendly the solution will be, while there's no need to worry about losing the affected tooth.
It is a misconception that a decayed tooth must be removed sooner or later. If you have it regularly checked by a dentist and they carry out the appropriate interventions, the problematic tooth can remain in the mouth for many decades.
6. Oral cancers can be detected early.
According to statistics, Hungary is also a world leader in oral cavity tumours, which can have numerous causes.
Risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, poor oral hygiene, and untreated stomach complaints such as reflux.
As with most cancerous diseases, early diagnosis is essential for the rapid and effective treatment of an oral cancer patient.
The six-monthly dental check-up is therefore ideal for dentists to detect any related changes that may be starting to develop in the oral cavity, and then to refer the patient to the appropriate specialist.
Thanks to modern medicine, most types of oral cancer can now be cured with very good chances of survival, but early diagnosis is the most important prerequisite for this.
7. We receive help to maintain proper oral hygiene
The appropriate Oral hygiene This is very important for avoiding most dental problems. However, most people do not have sufficient basic knowledge for this, or at best, they only manage to choose the right toothbrush or toothpaste.
However, this is not enough in itself, and we can realise this if we regularly attend dental check-ups. Brushing our teeth twice a day is often not enough to keep them healthy, as it requires correct use of the toothbrush and other accessories.
These include interdental brushes or dental floss, but many may also need to use certain mouthwashes.
If oral hygiene is not adequate, the dentist will notice it immediately during a routine check-up. In many cases, this is not solely the patient's fault, as it can happen, for example, that due to crowded teeth, certain parts of the oral cavity cannot be cleaned properly.
At times like these, dental hygiene advice is needed, where trained professionals help you to master the basics of correct tooth brushing in a personalised way, as well as the method of using the aforementioned accessories.
A regular dental check-up cannot be started too early.
Unfortunately, in our country, proper children's oral hygiene receives very little attention, which is why it is surprisingly common to see severe decay on newly erupted permanent teeth as early as the age of 10-12.
It is now worth getting our children accustomed to visiting a dentist for check-ups at least twice a year, as it is particularly important to identify problems in their case at an early stage.
Professionals can help not only with mastering the correct way to brush your teeth, but also with detecting changes early on that might require orthodontic treatment.
As soon as the first permanent teeth emerge, it's worth having your child checked every six months, as providing them with a good foundation for proper oral hygiene means they'll have far fewer problems with their dental health later on.
