Bleeding gums is one of the most common dental problems, which 90 percent of people experience almost regularly. In most cases, it is completely harmless, but in case of strong or prolonged bleeding, a dental examination is essential.<\/p>\n

This symptom in every case indicates a change. It may be that we are only talking about a minor injury, but it cannot be ruled out that inflammation is behind it, and without treatment, it can cause very serious health complications.<\/p>\n

Before we delve deeper into the causes of bleeding gums, however, it's important to define healthy gums.<\/p>\n

Then we can discuss this if the surface in question is a pinkish hue, but by no means red, and furthermore fits snugly and tightly against the teeth.<\/p>\n

It plays a very important role in the oral cavity, as it not only stabilises the teeth but also provides protection against bacteria found in the oral cavity and mechanical damage.<\/p>\n

\nCauses of bleeding gums<\/h2>\n

The most frequent cause of bleeding gums is poor oral hygiene. This can often occur even in those who brush their teeth regularly, but not thoroughly enough.<\/p>\n

This is because the spaces between teeth and the gum line are extremely difficult to clean properly. Consequently, plaque often builds up at the junction of the teeth and gums, and even more so in the spaces between teeth, providing a perfect environment for bacteria to proliferate.<\/p>\n

If plaque is not removed properly, the body may react with inflammation, which is a breeding ground for bleeding gums. An even bigger problem is that persistent plaque build-up can cause tartar to form on the surface.<\/p>\n

This sets off a domino effect, as tartar provides an even more secure environment for bacteria, and unlike plaque, it cannot be removed at home, so it will always require dental hygiene treatment.<\/p>\n

Calculus can very often lead to permanent or recurrent gingivitis, one of the most common symptoms of which is bleeding gums, which may initially occur only when brushing, but can later occur spontaneously or during eating.<\/p>\n

As we have just described, periodontal disease develops as a result of neglected gingivitis. Bleeding gums are one of the most characteristic symptoms, however, it should be known that this can only develop in cases of severely neglected teeth.<\/p>\n

This is a huge problem because the inflammation has already spread from the gums to the bone tissue, which then begins to decay, the teeth can become loose and if the patient does not seek immediate dental hygiene treatment, tooth loss will result.<\/p>\n

For example, research has found a link between the appearance of periodontal disease and diabetes, but its persistent presence also promotes the development of cardiovascular diseases and even heart attacks.<\/p>\n

Pregnant mothers should pay particular attention to gingivitis and periodontitis. These conditions increase the risk of premature birth, the likelihood of developing pre-eclampsia, and the chance of the baby being born with a low birth weight.<\/p>\n

The wrong toothbrush and brushing technique<\/h3>\n

Another thing that should not be overlooked about bleeding gums is that they can often cause minor or major injuries in the mouth. Most of the time this is related to improper brushing technique or the wrong toothbrush.<\/p>\n

Gum bleeding can be caused, for example, by pressing too hard on the teeth, but even more so on the gums, with a toothbrush. This can cause injuries that lead to constant or occasionally recurring gum bleeding after brushing.<\/p>\n

The same is true if you choose a toothbrush with too strong bristles or too wide a head. Bleeding from the gums is not usually regular, but only occasional.<\/p>\n

Besides a poor toothbrush, improper use of other accessories, such as interdental brushes, can also cause bleeding gums, but those whose gums are too sensitive may often experience such discomfort even when using dental floss.<\/p>\n

By carefully selecting and using the tools employed for maintaining oral hygiene, along with dental hygiene advice, the problem of bleeding gums can generally be most easily eliminated in such cases.<\/p>\n

Hormonal changes<\/h3>\n

Bleeding gums can also be caused by hormonal changes, another phenomenon that can cause serious problems in the oral cavity. Women are most at risk, especially if they are not able to counteract these processes with good oral hygiene.<\/p>\n

In addition to puberty, hormonal changes typically have a very negative impact on women's teeth during pregnancy and menopause. This makes gingivitis and associated bleeding of the gums more likely to occur.<\/p>\n
