Dental care from decades ago left a deep impression on many, as the focus was not on patient comfort, but rather on effective symptom management.<\/p>\n
This often resulted in unpleasant anaesthesia, or even painful treatments without anaesthesia.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, this is now a thing of the past, as empathy is the number one factor in today's modern dental treatments. In our practice, we place particular emphasis on comprehensively informing our patients, on fear-reducing communication, and on ensuring that our treatments are as pain-free as possible.<\/p>\n
Painless dental anaesthesia
\nNowadays, there is an increasing demand for pain-free dental treatments, whether it's full anaesthesia or laser dentistry procedures that can be completely pain-free without the use of anaesthetic.<\/p>\n
In medicine, there are many types of anaesthetic methods, and in dentistry, local anaesthetic methods are most commonly used. The task of local anaesthetics is the temporary cessation of the conductivity of sensory nerves, nerve fibres and nerve endings in the treatment area.<\/p>\n
Thanks to these medicines, the patient does not feel any pain during treatments. Let's look at what specific anaesthesia methods exist!<\/p>\n
Terminal anaesthesia
\nTypically, the upper teeth are anaesthetised using this technique. Anaesthetic is only administered to the tooth being treated, directly next to the tooth, using a terminal method, so the anaesthetised area is small. Since the upper jawbone structure is spongy, the less dense bone allows the anaesthetic solution to spread.<\/p>\n
This technique cannot be performed on the lower jaw due to anatomical conditions, as the bone structure here is much denser, preventing the anaesthetic solution from reaching the desired area.<\/p>\n
2. Conduction anaesthesia
\nThe most common method used for anaesthetising the lower teeth is conductive anaesthesia. The structure of the lower jaw is much harder and denser, so the anaesthetic solution cannot penetrate it effectively, which is why this procedure is used when treating the lower teeth.<\/p>\n
During this procedure, the anaesthetic solution is injected in close proximity to the nerve supplying the lower teeth. This causes the teeth, tongue, and cheek on that side to become numb.<\/p>\n
3. Mucosal anaesthesia
\nTo ensure complete painlessness, anaesthetic gel or spray can also be applied before administering the anaesthetic injection.<\/p>\n
These agents penetrate the mucous membranes, causing surface anaesthesia and blunting sensation within mere seconds. This means you won't even feel the anaesthetic being administered, and the treatment will be completely painless.<\/p>\n
4. Sedation in dentistry
\nThere are certain oral surgery procedures, such as the removal of multiple wisdom teeth at once, bone grafting or the insertion of dental implants, and special cases like managing panic attacks or severe nausea during treatment, where performing procedures under general anaesthesia may be indicated.<\/p>\n
At Naturadent, anaesthesia is administered by a qualified specialist anaesthetist and a specialist anaesthetic nurse. Prior to any treatment performed under anaesthesia, an ECG and laboratory tests are always carried out. Based on the results of these tests, the specialist anaesthetist will determine if you are fit for anaesthesia based on your health status.<\/p>\n
The course of anaesthesia
\nBefore administering anaesthesia, the dentist will first determine which tooth requires treatment and what anaesthetic method is necessary for it. Following this, with the assistance of dental nurses, they will prepare the anaesthetic agent, the appropriate sterile syringe, and needle.<\/p>\n
After the preparations, the dentist administers the active ingredient to the desired area using a hypodermic needle.<\/p>\n
During the injection of the anaesthetic, the patient may experience a minimal stinging sensation for a few seconds. This procedure can be uncomfortable, but it is not painful.<\/p>\n
Of course, if you are still anxious about the injection, there is also the option of applying a numbing gel to the designated area, which causes a localised numbness, so that even the needle prick will not be felt.<\/p>\n
The anaesthetic is administered approximately 5-15 minutes before the procedure. This is the time needed for the active ingredient to take effect, allowing the treatment to be carried out completely painlessly.<\/p>\n
Dental lidocaine \u2013 The most important information
\nIn current dental practice, anaesthetic agents containing articaine and lidocaine are most commonly used.<\/p>\n

In our practice, we use a local anaesthetic containing articaine (e.g. Ultracain DS Forte), which has a significantly greater potency than conventional lidocaine-based anaesthetics, thus ensuring completely painless treatment.<\/p>\n
After administration, it acts immediately, reaching its peak effect in approximately 5 minutes. Articaine is also highly effective in anaesthetising inflamed tissues and denser bone tissue.<\/p>\n
A further advantage over lidocaine is that it is much less allergenic and is cleared from the body more quickly. The version used in dentistry contains 4 per centtive ingredient and a small amount of adrenaline.<\/p>\n
Side effects
\nIn the hours following anaesthesia, your tongue and cheeks will feel numb, which may cause difficulty with swallowing and speaking.<\/p>\n
Therefore, while the anaesthetic is in effect, it is not advisable to eat or drink, as you may injure your tongue, the inside of your mouth through chewing due to the numbness, or even choke.<\/p>\n
To avoid these, it is advisable to drink plenty of fluids and eat a hearty meal before dental treatment to prevent hunger, dizziness, and nausea afterwards.<\/p>\n
Allergic reactions can occur with anaesthetics containing lidocaine, which is why our practice uses agents with articaine, a much less allergenic active ingredient.<\/p>\n
Lidocaine allergy
\nRelatively rarely, but it does occur in some patients that allergic symptoms develop after the use of anaesthetics containing lidocaine.<\/p>\n
Hives, itching on the trunk and limbs after an injection, followed by difficulty swallowing and potential swelling of the larynx, can all be signs of a lidocaine allergy. These symptoms can be alleviated with antihistamine and calcium administration.<\/p>\n
If you have ever experienced this, please inform your dentist before your dental treatment. In case of existing lidocaine allergy, it is recommended to use an anaesthetic agent containing a different active ingredient.<\/p>\n
In our clinic, to prevent allergic symptoms, we use a more effective and less allergenic anaesthetic containing articaine.<\/p>\n
Dental anaesthesia during pregnancy
\nDuring pregnancy, attention must also be paid to maintaining good dental health. All necessary dental treatments can be performed during pregnancy, but it is important to inform your treating doctor that you are expecting a baby.<\/p>\n
The use of lidocaine injection, as commonly applied, is not recommended during pregnancy as it can pass through the placenta to the baby.<\/p>\n
